John Mathias Tyson (Jan Mattison) was born in 1635 the second son of five (5) born to William and Elizabeth Tyson. Family tradition has it that the five brothers, William (1633); John (1635); Samuel (1637); Joel (1639); and Uriah (1641) all came over from the United Kingdom. However, after cross-checking and referencing information that I’ve acquired about their movements it is more likely that the only son born in the United Kingdom would have been William, Jr.

I’ve based this conclusion on the fact that William (John), Sr. arrived in America in 1635 and of the five sons William, Jr's. date of birth is the only one prior to that date.

The first of only a few records regarding John Tyson is found in Accomack County, Virginia. In 1679, John and his wife Susannika purchased 100 acres of land. John’s 100 acre purchase represented approximately 25 percent of the original patent granted in 1643 to Obediance Robins. Robins’ assigned the land to Montjoy Eveling and his wife Dorothy (Robins’ daughter). The land was willed or given to their son George Eveling who sold it in 1678 to William Andrews. John purchased the land from William Andrews.

I believe William Andrews is either Susannika's father or possibly her first husband and William John Tyse purchased their first land from him either as his son-in-law or as the new husband of Susannika.

Susannika (Andrews) Tyson (1636 - 1702)

Susannika was born in 1636, in England. She was married three (3) or four (4) times. I believe Susannika was married four times because records show that she also went by Andrews. At the time of her marriage to John she may have went by the name Andrews. So, if this is true John would have been her second husband. If this is her maiden name then the afore mentioned William Andrews could possibly be her father.

Note: Remember John’s purchase of 100 acres of land in Accomack County, Virginia, in 1678 was from a William Andrews. It’s my belief that this William Andrews was a relative of Susannika’s first husband or father, I don’t really know. There are two scenarios that presented themselves; 1) It makes perfect sense that the widow of this Andrews would own the land until she remarried. So, I believe Susannika could have owned the land left to her by her late husband Andrews, and upon John's’ marriage to Susannika a relative of Andrews was due compensation for the land if Susannika choose to remarry and keep the land; 2) Susannika was the daughter of the afore mentioned William Andrews and William (John) purchased the land with his wife from her father.

After John's death Susannika married Robert Thompson. It’s known that in 1691, Susannika and Robert Thompson joined Mathias (son) and his wife, Mary, in selling the 100 acres of land formerly belonging to John Tyson for 3000 pounds of tobacco in casks to Charles Parker, Gunsmith of Northampton, Virginia.

After Robert Thompson's death and prior to 1702 the year of Susannika’s death, Susannika married Robert Hamilton her third and possibly her fourth husband.

John and Susannika were blessed with three children Mathias (1660); Anne (1665); and Katherine (1668). I’ve found no information on Anne and Katherine.
